After the events that occurred in Bulgaria during England’s 6-0 demolition 3 weeks ago, it was clear that racism is still prominent within football. Despite two stoppages throughout the game due to the racist acts of some Bulgarian fans the abuse continued in what was described as one of the “most appalling nights in football“.
However, the problem is closer to home
I think it’s important to begin by acknowledging how shocking this was, but also how English football has its fair share of problems. As this campaign focused specifically on the Premier League that is what will be discussed. Throughout the years many black, Asian and ethnic minority footballers have been subject to racist abuse which is something that should not be tolerated, however, due to the lack of punishments and publicity of such behaviour it is something that continues to plague the sport we all love.
How the Premier League thought they would challenge this
The #NoRoomForRacism campaign kicked off in mid October with many influential stars getting behind the campaign: Raheem Sterling amongst others was at the forefront to show that football will no longer tolerate racism. This featured re-designed match day balls and pre-match promos. Ultimately, each match within this week was designed around the campaign to gain awareness of the problem and help tackle it. I believe this campaign is a step in the right direction but much more needs to be done in order to continue eradicating racism in and out of football rather than just a week long campaign. In retrospect, Bulgaria were fined £65,000 in comparison to footballer Nicklas Bendtner who was fined £86,000 for showing the logo of a betting company on his pants.
What we must do heading forward.
It is crucial campaigns such as this one continue along with much stricter punishment for those who continue with these acts. We must raise awareness but whilst doing so tackle the problem. As mentioned multiple times, a real stand should be taken and punishments should have a real effect on the teams and fans involved in order to truly kick racism out of football.
