Excitable Edgar – John Lewis & Waitrose – 9/10
As always, John Lewis provides a great Christmas advert. This one revolves around a little girl and her friend dragon, Edgar. The problem is Edgar is cannot control his instinct of breathing fire and often this results in awkward situations. From melting snowmen to melting ice, Edgar see’s problem after problem. The advert ends on a happy note with him entering the Christmas dinner and everybody panicking, luckily he uses his fire-breathing power to light the Christmas pudding and everybody celebrates.
E.T Revisits Earth – Sky – 10/10
This heart-warming 2 minute advert from Sky reconnects both E.T and a now fully-grown Elliot. The advertisement begins with Elliots children seeing E.T in their garden whilst playing, to which Elliot introduces his old friend and invites to stay. The lovable extra-terrestrial is then introduced to the latest technology; a VR headset, tablets and of course Sky’s on demand films and voice-activated remote. Overall, the advert promotes spending time with friends and family this Christmas and generates an uplifting mood throughout.
Reindeer Ready – Mcdonalds – 7/10
Equipped with its own hashtag, #ReindeerReady is a great Christmas ad from McDonald’s. Beginning with a young girl feeling lonely with nobody to play with along comes a friendly reindeer. The young girl continues to get to know the reindeer, feeding it raindeer treats until one day she runs out. Of course, McDonald’s sells them and her Dad takes her to pick some up. The advert ends with the reindeer in fact being the family dog. Once again another ad showing the importance of family during Christmas, whether human or animal.
Silence The Critics – IKEA – 10/10
After receiving a text from a friend that they will be visiting for dinner, the recipient feels embarrassed at her outdated home. With D-Double E voicing furniture in the house and joking about the state of the home, the owner decides to buy a load of IKEA furniture to no longer feel embarrassed. A humorous short advert that promotes both IKEA and D Double E, ultimately, the revamp of the house ‘silences the critics’.
Kevin the Carrot – ALDI – 9/10
Last but not least, the infamous Kevin the Carrot features in the ALDI Christmas advert. With a vegetable war ongoing, the Brussel Sprouts have Kevin stringed up. Luckily managing to escape, he puts on a large circus performance whilst showing the wide-range of Christmas food ALDI are providing this Christmas. A great advert that has left shoppers once again fighting over the Kevin the Carrot teddy.
